Hi, Good questions. Max suggested it was a transistor starting to fail as it
is a scratchy sound and not normal tape hiss or sound from a worn NLS tape.
I gave it a thorough cleaning including the tape heads, changed batteries, etc..
The scratchy static type sound tends to come and go as it gets banged around
and, for now, it is operating normally so I'll just roll with it for as long as
I can.
If I need to replace it some day, it looks like IRTI still carries this model.

does it make the voice sound a bit "ducky" or like a side band?
If so, that's the effect I get from old nls tapes.
Head wear? Pinch roller wear?
