Bentley says this bolt is to the engine, but I believe they are speaking figuratively. It appears that this bolt goes through the alternator adjustment bracket and into an aluminum support bracket, with the support bracket being bolted to the engine. My plan is to remove the alternator and then remove the aluminum support bracket. With the support bracket on my workbench, I'll be able to easy-out or drill out the broken bolt. Two questions: 1. Am I correct in regard to that aluminum support bracket? Is there any reason that bracket would be difficult or complicated to remove? It appears relatively straightforward. 2. The bolt that sheared off appears to have been a odd-shaped fastener? One end of the support bracket has a large diameter hole while the other end has a small diameter hole. Presumably, the bolt had a very large diameter unthreaded shank and a much smaller diameter threaded section at the end. Yes? No? My plan is to put in a simple small diameter bolt that matches the threads. This would leave a long section of shank with no support perpendicular to the bolted connection. Not ideal, but you would not think it would be a highly stressed fastening with just belt tension on it (though it did break once ...). Any chance that E30's or Bavaria's take the same fastener? They are the only parts cars I have around. It doesn't thread into the bracket, there is a nut behind it. The bolt has an idler gear on it that engages the rack of teeth on the steel U shaped piece. This is for belt tightening. You will need factory parts. Everything else is a normal type bolt. The bolt I mean is the one that goes from the adjustment bracket to the aluminum support bracket. I have been able to remove the support bracket and get the piece of bolt out of it. You are correct, the bolt is a standard bolt. So my wife calls and tells me that the CE light is on. When she gets home I hook up the trusty Peake scan tool and get "dd". In the Peake manual I'm directed to use Chart 2 and-Surprise!-no "dd". I've checked the Peake site and found no explanation either. Has anyone else run into this? Thanks!
