Subject: E30 fuel pressure regulator followup
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I went ahead and replaced my fuel pressure regulator after it failed every
test in the book. The new one had a different number than the old one, but a
quick search showed that the difference in numbers was the difference
between a painted and non-painted unit. I guess the painted one isn't
offered anymore. At any rate, it is a 3 Bar regulator as it should be for my
325i. Installation was simple, but the fuel hose was so old and hard that I
couldn't get a good seal... I replaced all the fuel lines. They may have
been original.

The idle is improved, but not perfect yet. The hesitation and lack of power
problems are gone. The engine is now velvety smooth on launch and no longer
bucks, burbles, or complains on low/no throttle conditions (like going down
a slight grade where you aren't really on the throttle and you aren't engine
braking either). I lost much of the ticky noise (which I had assumed to be
valve noise) while under way. I assume the racket had to do with abnormal
injector timing as the O2 sensor compensated for a lean engine.

I then went after the crankcase breather line on general principals. The old
one didn't have any leaks that I could find, even after removal but it was
old and hard. Really hard. Hard enough that when I gave it a good solid bend
(90-100 degrees or so) it snapped in half. I don't mean cracked and tore, I
mean snapped like a piece of PVC pipe. New one goes in easier than the
old one came out, and I discover that the little metal elbow the comes off
the throttle housing and goes to the ICV is loose. I add some gasket sealer
and reseat it.

No obvious change in idle, but I now that I am paying more attention, I
notice that the idle is rougher when I am holding the brakes. I checked the
metal elbows where the brake booster connects to the manifold. The top one
was loose too, so I gooped it up as well. I haven't tested that repair yet.

So, to sum it up:

The fuel pressure regulator was the cause of my obvious problems, but I did
have some potential vacuum leaks as well. Anyone with an E30 should add the
little pressed in metal elbows to the list of potential vacuum leaks. They
look fine from the outside, but could be a leak anyway and are not normally
considered as they are assumed to be part of the housing not a removable
piece. Brake related vacuum leaks could also be a pain to find because you
probably notice the poor idle they produce while sitting in traffic, but you
aren't using the vacuum booster when the wheels are blocked and you are
nosing about the engine.

I have to replace a pile of o-rings in the oil filter housing to stop my
last oil leak, do a valve adjust, flush the brake lines, replace the muffler
(not rusted out... I backed into a driveway with a strange slope/twist/curb
arrangement punched my exhaust tip through the muffler), and replace the
sub-frame bushings and that is it for the annual maintainance.

Still not bad when you figure that I have one item in there that is due to
outright damage, two standard maintainance items, and the rest is all 18 year
old rubber parts.

Been looking at two cars with friends, an Imola M-Roadster and an Imola
Red II X5. The X5 and the M-Roadster were each built in South Carolina,
so what is different between the colors?

I have seen an Imola Red M3 at still another dealership and never seen
the three cars at one time.

Anyone know the difference?

3.0 OBD1 and (EWS1) FOR SALE.
I recently purchased this car to turn into a race car. I've decided to go
with a euro engine and will not be needing this one. I'm including the
engine harness, ecu with performance chip, ecis intake, exhaust manifold and
M3 gauge cluster.
The engine is a *TMU* (true mileage unknown). I test drove the car with this
engine. Car starts right up. No obvious smoking issues or funny noises. The
head gasket has been replaced per the previous owner as well as the water
pump. I don't know why the head gasket had to be replaced. This would be an
awesome candidate for a winter project.
I would like to get $2500 for the engine. Shipping at the buyers expense.
**I will also make available the 5 speed manual tranny if someone would like
a package deal**
I'd like to get $3700 for both...plus shipping.
I WILL NOT SELL THE TRANNY BEFORE SELLING THE ENGINE.
Shipping would be from Knoxville, TN

Thanks for looking. Feel free to make me an offer. I have already been
offered $2k for the engine and have declined it.

Hey guys,

Kragen has a coupon in their ad this weekend for Mobil
1 for 3.99/quart. I headed on over and picked up some
5-30 for my 95 M3. However, I have been using the
"Extended Performance" 15-50. Checking the owner's
manual, in one of those oil grade vs temperature
charts, it shows the top of the 5-30 bar at about
25°F. Obviously that temp is never reached here in
southern California, but I know that many new vehicles
recommend 5-30. In any case, what weight oil do other
fellow E36 M3 owners use in their cars? My VANOS is
in need of replacement very soon, so should I stick
with the thicker weight of 15-50 for now or is the
5-30 okay?

And to finally settle it: does anyone know which of
the Mobil 1 varieties is a true PAO base stock? I'm
almost positive the new "Mobil Clean 5000 or 7500"
stuff is not fully synthetic, but I *think* the
"Extended Performance" variety is. But does anyone
know if the just plain old Mobil 1, (bottle:
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Images/Products/M1BASE_0W40.gif
) is truly fully synthetic (PAO base stock) as well?
The bottle DOES say 'fully synthetic' but I am
doubtful because of that court case whenever it was
regarding the definitions of fully synthetic.

I'm sure Gary might have a say at this one, and anyone
else who can lend some info or insight would be
appreciated as well.

Thanks!
Brian

P.S. Seeing as how today is 9.11, I just wanted to
note to the list to remember those who lost their
lives and to pray for our troops, for their protection
and wisdom to carry out the directions and objectives
commanded to them.

BMW oil is 5W-30 but on the thick side of the range, and is ACEA A3 rated.
Mobil 1 5W-30 is on the thin side of the range and is not ACEA A3 rated.
ACEA is a Euro rating. A3 is for high performance and high speed use.

In the Mobil 1 family, the 0W-40 and 15W-50 plus a new 10W-40 have the A3
rating.

I use 0W-40 in my M50 and 15W-50 in the S38.

See www.bobistheoilguy.com for lots of info, also www.mobil1.com.

You will have more power and better fuel economy with thinner oil, but more
wear.
