Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had comments/thoughts in regards to the LTW
replica wheels that can be found on eBay. The offset and size seems to be
correct. (is the center bore correct?)

Trying to find an OEM set all but seems impossible.

I know these aren't forged, but my DS's aren't either.

Here is a link to the item:

Any thoughts or opinions would be great!

Thanks!

I use these for my daily street wheels on and E36 //M3. The fit
and finish are fine. The machined surfaces are not as shiny as the
picture makes it look, but still a sharp looking wheel. I've seen them
from several sellers and for prices around $400. a set. Also the seller
in the link is gouging on the shipping. It should not be more than
$40-50. for the set of four.
I've seen posted, though not able to confirm, that these are made
in Italy by one of the BMW's OEM wheel suppliers. Anyone know?
From time to time used sets of these come up on EBay too, for way
less, or including tires.

I have a set of these which came w/a car I bought. mine are
~20mm offset & consequently have the larger E39 centerbore.

they are HEAVY. never weighed one, but they've got to be well
into the 24+ lb range. I guess they've gotten better at making
them lighter if the auction is to be believed in terms of weight.
that weigh is in fact only a pound or two more than the OE
forged wheels weigh. mine are also very much not round
any more. they needed a ton of wheel weights to get them
to balance when I last used them for something a couple of
years ago. I need to unload them to someone who has a
5-series & needs junky winter wheels.

I would keep whatever factory cast wheels you have now &
save up for a set of actually light wheels rather than buy
crappy replicas just to look nice with.

then again I'm a wheel snob.

For an E39 size wheel, 24# would be at or less than stock weight.
For reference, a set of four Borbet T type 17x8 I picked up in a trade
weigh ~19# each on a reasonably accurate bathroom scale, and these are
considered light wheels, just not silly light.
My M replica's have not had balancing problems with a few
different tires, and have not picked up out of rounds in the two years
I've had them. Wheel balance problems are as much related to the tire
and the skill of the person mounting and balancing them as to wheel
variations. Out of round rims are often result from too low, or factory
spec tire pressures. 35+ rear/ 40+front psi will keep the rim round
with a 225/45, 245/40 or similar tire size unless you drive through a
small crater.

Although I haven't seen them in a while, those replicas were also
available in 4-lug for the E30. I had considered getting a set, but
instead I'm going to probably get Ronal LS's for my '91 318i cabrio.

Prevalent BS rumor. No BMW supplier makes an "almost the same as OE" wheel
for the aftermarket.

A knock-off is a knock-off.

If you want LTW-like wheels. Just lurk and keep your eyes open for a used set
of the real thing. They shows up used every few months. I got one in great
shape for $800 with useable rubber on it.

There appears to be life after gasoline. At least for local trips.
(<250mi).

Can't wait to see the price-punchline.

Wonder how BMW is coming along in this area (OBMWC)
