This may or may not apply directly to a 6-cylinder E30, but years ago my
sister's early '90's 4-cylinder VW GTI broke its timing belt and
sustained no engine damage. The belt failure occurred at startup or
very shortly thereafter. The mechanic that fixed the vehicle was
surprised. Whether it is also possible for an E30 to escape damage I do
not know; but, clearly it would be unusual.

She luckily had the 8 valve motor. We had the 16v and it wasn't a
'rollover' engine. Recommended replacement at 60k, ours broke at 62k.
I still have one of the valves.

How does the removal of your mother-in-law affect the oxygen sensors? Never
mind, it is probably best for us not to know.

Hi all,
Saw this on Craigslist this AM, I can investigate if anyone is
interested. I would love to buy it, but I already have a GMC EM50
(think Stripes) style motorhome.
