Hi. the databases are available. the folks at envision america have a database on their ID Mate with about 1.5 million products in it. I have one and it is great, now I can go to the store and usually find want I am shopping for without help.
just do a search using google for upc code databases.

interfacing a bar code scanner might not be too difficult, but I wonder
where you'd find a database that connects barcodes to products and even
dosage information.  I'd be really worried about advising dosage
information, by the way, just imagine if there was a mistake in the
