I would like to know, why it is that when people talk about things they would like to see, that some of us mention excel, and a few people get on the list, and say the majority doesn't know how to use it, maybe those people don't know how to use computers, but they should stop talking in the majority, for there are many of us out here that use excel, and want it, and that shouldn't be our fault. If Humanware went on the basis of people not knowing how to use something, then there would be a lot of people who couldn't use their products, but they don't do that, they sell the products in hope that someone will get training if they can't use it, and that is the way it should be for all products.

I agree, Rusty I can't stress this enough and I believe that HW
is in
agreement with myself and others who don't see a spreadsheet
being used by
the majority of braille note users.
Yes. I could relearn my spreadsheet technique, but how many of
the thousands
of braille note users are conversant with spreadsheets?
I venture that if HW took a survey that the numbers would be
small.
Sounds like a good use for the statistical calculator<grin>.

Hi folks,
On the subject of XL, I'm not saying I don't want it. I'm saying
that for
the purposes of financial management, XL is not the right tool
for the job
for most of us.

By all means, HW should put pocket XL on the BN, but they should
also create
a financial management package for those of us for whom XL is not
the
answer.

Hello Rusty,
I believe that you have some good ideas here.
But I would say that many college students need excel because
that is simply
what is used on campus.
So, I would say, if it is possible, maybe Humanware could
eventually make it
so that one could easily choose which they prefer.
Just a suggestion.

Hi folks,
This was obviously a popular topic and it brings to light the
real necessity
of a financial package on the BN.

In answer to those who are afraid of carrying financial info on
their bn,
there are several possibilities that I can think of.

1. The program could be password protected. To enter the
keymoney program,
please enter your password.
2. The most obvious argument is, who's going to seek out
braillenotes and
learn how to hack them just to learn my sorry financial state?
This is such
an obscure device that HW is not designing a virus package
because people
won't write viruses for it.
3. I certainly wouldn't store SSN ETC.
4. Put your finances on a flash card and store it some where
else.

As for working across platforms, I believe that Quicken uses a
file format
that can be shared. If not, there are exchangible file formats.
So you could
work on the BN and then import that info in to your pc program.
In addition,
many banks offer you the ability to download account history
suitable for
import in to your money program. To be really useful, The
keymoney program
should support these file formats and play well with other
programs.

As for this idea of using XL, this is exactly what I suggest we
stay away
from. I respect the idea that many people are taught to use XL
to manage
their money. I also respect the idea that xl is a powerful
program, but
something like quicken takes the difficulty out of things. I
don't think
most want to learn how to configure quicken, set up formulas,
lable rows and
columns, ETC! I believe that more people will use a program which
does the
thinking for them.

I suggest that it should have several entry fields. Type of
transaction
(ATM, check, deposit ETC,) category (household, business,
investment,
entertainment, ETC,) Check number (if aplicable,) account,
amount, it will
enter the date and do an automatic calculation of what I should
have in my
account. It could also add or subtract from a running total,
based on the
category, of how much I've spent in a particular area and show me
how much
I've spent in a particular budget area.
Since I don't now use a financial package, but will start soon, I
don't
really know what else it might have just yet.

If this is not the only program I use, then it should be able to
store the
info so I can then cync to the PC later.

Additionally, there should be a set of formulas, interest
calculator,
compound interest calculator, stuff like this.

This is not anything new. I believe that some other program such
as quicken
could, and should, be ported to the BN. No sense reinventing the
wheel, and
it makes sense to stay as close to the industry standards as
possible.

Thanks for reading!

Rusty

Ray, you raise an excellent point; and this is definitely a major
point
against such a feature.

As Ray has said, we use MS Excel for our finances and it works
well. It is
more secure too because it is less portable. This is why I won't
keep
financial information on my VN.
