In general, it is one thing to talk about something, but quite another to consider all of the things that must be done to actually make it happen.

I want to say that I am not opposed to user replaceable batteries. I
simply don't want to have to shell out more money for a while, I just
received an mPower, and I want to enjoy it. And I would bet my next pay
check that when this redesign comes along, and people have to send in
their Braillenotes and pay hard money for it, 90 per cent of those who
are on the band wagon for user replaceable batteries will be outraged
about what it costs. It's much easier to write about what you'd like
than to find the money to pay for it when it comes about.

We should also keep in mind that different companies charge
different
amounts based on how much extra money they have. If a company has a lot
of
extra money, updates and repairs might not cost as much. Just something
to
consider.

Hi,

I have an old Braille Lite 40. A few years ago I had it modified so
that
it now has a replaceable battery and also uses metal hidride rather
than
nicads. I had some other work done at the same time, so I can't say
for
sure what the cost was, but I think my total bill was under $300 for
everything, including cleaning.

The problem comes, not so much in the design of such a product with

make
its battery user-replaceable. This may very well, if it ever came to
pass, cause an increase in the price of the BN.
One other point to keep in mind is that most of us have had to send
our
BN's away for at least a week or two, possibly twice, in order to
have
the hardware modified, and most users I know would be very hesitant to

part with their units again unless the need were dire.

I don't believe, albeit I am not sure what it all entails, that
redesigning
the BrailleNote so as to allow people to install a battery(ies) would
necessary increase the cost by a thousand dollars or even more. There
is
a
third party note taker that has this functionality and it does not
even
cost
up to $6,000. It can be done if there is the will!

Sincerely,
Olusegun
