No, what you're forgetting is that the Braillenot is already here.  Any
redesign costs money. Manufacturing is not a simple matter of say
tearing off the back of the Braillenote, pulling out a battery, and
finding a way to  create a battery compartment.  
In all probability, a different battery would be necessary, which would
entail changing the charging circuitry at least.
The other note taker you speak of was designed this way in the
beginning.

I don't believe, albeit I am not sure what it all entails, that
redesigning 
the BrailleNote so as to allow people to install a battery(ies) would 
necessary increase the cost by a thousand dollars or even more.  There
is a 
third party note taker that has this functionality and it does not even
cost 
up to $6,000.  It can be done if there is the will!
