Dear Janel and list:

While places like Radio Shack or Batteries Are Us do sell and
install batteries for various kinds of equipment, having them
replace the battery on a BrailleNote is not recommended.

They may do a good job or they may screw up and damage your unit
beyond repair!

And them trying to work on the unit will void your warranty.

Also, while your unit is in for battery replacement, Humanware
has an opportunity to check it over, clean the Braille display
etc and keep your unit in top working order.

So your counsellor is right, there are other places that may be
able to replace the unit's battery, but do you really want to
entrust your unit to someone who isn't thoroughly experienced at
working on it?

If your unit gets damaged, it may be very expensive or take quite
some time to repair it. I don't think its worth the risk to have
it worked on elsewhere.
