I have only ever lost data when:
1. I reset with a document open, and after KS6.x that only erases
changes not saved, not the whole thing.
2. the BN says, upon exiting a document, "exception: converter.
Access violation reading/writing [RAM address]".
3. I switch out of a document to another application then switch
back. I avoid doing this because sometimes the data of the
document will be gone and cannot be recovered.
Other than that I have never lost data, whether on my flash disk
or removable media (on a classic and mPower). I had a classic
from December 2002 until February 2006, at which time I switched
to the mPower. I love my BN and, except for its outdated Windows
CE OS and no SDK, can find no reason to switch to a Pac Mate or
Braille/VoiceSense.

described by Mary Ellen occurs much less frequently now than
when I first
started using BrailleNotes. Several years ago it used to happen
with some
regularity, but I've only lost one file in the last year. Memory
management
seems to be much better. To safeguard against this type of data
loss, I
avoid using the internal flash disk and I create and store all
files on
compact flash or SD cards.
The BrailleNote does have a backup utility which works quite well
in my
experience.

PCs is true, that happense *very rarely. If the BN frequently

I currently use a competitor's product--the one that came out in
fall of
2003. I can't say I *never lose data, but if I do, it's because
the unit
has locked up and a cold reset must be performed, so I know that
any data
that hasn't been backed up is lost. I'm on this list because I
was
considering purchasing a BN. If what Mary Ellen describes is a
pervasive
problem with these units, I think that just took the BN right
off the
table for me. I'll tolerate lots of bugs in a product, but data
loss is
definitely not one of them.

P.S. I also you Sprite Backup with my current unit. I know the
BN has
some kind of backup feature, at least I think it does. It would
be a good
thing if that program could allow you to back up your data to a
storage
card.

material. I am even talking about material which has

Speak which had a user replacible battery. Ok they went back and
did a
total makeover of the machine which came out in the fall of 2004
and
guess
what? The battery was not user replacible. Why? Because there
had been
numerous problems with the earlier model of the pacmate Bns
because of
that user replacible batteries.
I have no doubt technology has come a long way since then and I
too
would
love to change my battery out but we have to realize hw can only
pack so
much in an upgrade at any given time and they have only so many
people
in
development.
In a perfect world there would be that one perfect machine with
everything
for everyone but alas, this is 2007 the world is not a perfect
world and
now you have myriads of machines out there to choose from, so
you do not
like the features of one machine, go to its competitor and
perhaps you
will find what you want from them.
