Hello guys
If I may make a suggestion, there is a very good tool to use to pry
the grouphead’s shower screen/gasket out. It is called a “Paint Can
Opener”. You can get it from any hardware store –the paint department
of Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc. In the good old days when gas was 75
cents/gallon they used to give them for free when you buy paint, along
with the wooden stir sticks. But now they are selling them for about
$1.
Using the paint can opener is a much more elegant solution then using
butter knives and pry bars. The paint can opener is a mini pry bar of
sorts.
But I made it even better. What I did was slide in a piece of
transparent plastic tubing over the front part of the can opener
leaving just the hooked flat tip exposed as well as the part of the
handle with the loop which you are holding. That way the metal handle
is insulated and it doesn’t damage the grouphead’s rim at the points
of contact while prying off the shower screen. You can even put some
tape on the hooked flat “working” tip of the tool to prevent it from
scratching the metal rim of the shower screen. It will also provide
some friction and reduce chances of slipping.
So put this little handy tool in your coffee drawer (the one under the
machine) and use your butter knife for…butter!
I have removed my shower screen/ gasket only once so far and I used
the metal rim at the bottom of the screen successfully. I wouldn’t
try to pry off the gasket instead –it is too deep up in the grouphead
and too damageable. The metal lip is much easier to access and
provides a nice resistance when using the “flat hook” of the paint can
opener.
Warning! Paint can openers come in different tip designs. Some tips
“engage” the metal lip of the shower screen better then others. Buy a
few different ones to experiment.
Hope this little tip helps!
Greetings,
Brewtus Maximus
