If you're comfortable working around electricity, turn it on and after a bit 
gently move the wire and see if that effects the reading. The hot ticket for a 
test like that is to move a small bend along the length of the wire. Not enough 
to actually bend it, just so you know you've checked every inch of the wire.If 
you have a ohm meter you could also check the resistance of the sense wire and 
the resistance of the sense element to ground.
