The PID unit on my IV-R is acting very erratic. Displaying seemingly random temperatures after initial set up on a outlet timer.
This is the email I sent to WLL concerning my problem- *Hi there- I purchased this unit a year or two ago and have not had any issues whatsoever; super happy with it. I recently made the jump and plumbed it into my cold water line. (Previously I had the line running into a five gallon plastic jug with no issue.) I've run this for a few days with no issues so I'm confident the unit is getting all of the water it needs. Last night I decided to plug the unit into a digital outlet timer<http://tinyurl.com/mr64qcf>from Home Depot. I set the schedule and left the two switches in the 'on' position before going to bed. When I woke up, the machine was on (huzzah!) but the temperature, normally set a 201, was bouncing very erratically. It would quickly display 203-205-204-208-214-208-209 etc... The highest it made it was 214 before I just shut the unit off. While it was bouncing though, I hopped into the PRG menu and make sure it was set to 201. It was. I had to leave for work so I couldn't experiment with taking it off of the timer, letting the machine cool down and then restarting. I will probably do this when I get home. Do you know of any caveats when putting this machine on such a timer? Is there a reset I should perform? Any information is appreciated as the manual doesn't address this type of phenomenon. * A few notes- The unit was purchased in mid April of 2012. The heater was not on while the temperature 'climbed'. I just turned it off out of concern. After pulling the unit off the timer, I started it back up and the same problem persisted. I tried to reset the unit by holding the two buttons while switching it on. No good. I sent this out Saturday morning around 8am. I did not receive any response so I called tech support Monday morning. I spoke with Kathy and she suggested removing the temperature probe and making sure it was clean. I did that and upon turning the machine on, the PID just displayed seemingly random numbers 110-115-112-108-102-114 etc... The unit is heating as displayed by the little dot on the PID. I spoke with Kathy again Tuesday and she asked me to make sure that the connection with the PID was solid. I checked last night and it was, but the same problem persisted. This morning I spoke with tech services (Kathy) again and she suggested three options since the unit was too far out of warranty (3 months...) 1. Buy a new temperature probe at $72 and hope this corrects the problem 2. Buy a new PID and temperature probe kit for $235 and hope this corrects the problem 3. Send the unit in for repair and pay $60/hr plus parts and freight. I'm not super thrilled about chancing the purchase of the sensor only to find that I need a new PID which is not available by itself. I expressed my frustration in the situation but was met with a firm 'take it or leave it' attitude. There was a total lack of empathy and it just made me regret buying the unit in the first place. I don't expect brand new internals free of charge, but I do expect a company to work with me on a piece of equipment selling for 2 thousand dollars. If her attitude is representative of the companies' feelings towards its customers, that's very unfortunate. Shame on me for not doing my homework ahead of time. I guess I maybe should have known better when the only parts breakdown available on the site is a Spanish version. I emailed Todd directly as he seems to be the expert around here. Hopefully he can shed some light on the situation and I can get my unit working again.
