I've had really good luck removing them by letting brew pressure push it
out most of the way. I put the portafilter on, flip the lever, and as the
pressure builds I remove the portafilter. Water usually gets under the
gasket and breaks it loose. A time or two I also screwed a screw into the
gasket and pulled it out but mostly I've been able to break it loose with
water pressure.
