Somewhere along the way I learned from this list or by accident that the real secret is to remove the screen and gasket together. I.e. pry the screen out and the gasket comes along since the screen has a lip on it. With the old screens, I disposed of them and so used a church key or screwdriver on the side of the screen--it just dented into it and got a bite (same as the oyster knife, I'm sure). Since I bought the expensive screen, I have to be more careful (but it has a great lip on it that protrudes at the bottom), and so usually use the back/square end of a bamboo chopstick or similar. Works a treat.
