The roads are actually a National Park (only in the USA could we designate
roads as National Parks - so far, I know of five (Skyline Drive is not a
separate entity from Shenandoah).   Skyline Drive starts at Shenandoah
National Park in Virginia, and runs down the backbone of the Park.   Once
it leaves Shenandoah, it becomes the Blue Ridge Parkway, which connects you
all the way to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North
Carolina/Tennessee.
