Thank you Alberto.
People like to forget that Bush was governor of the second largest state in
the Union, and won election by attracting large numbers of certain
demographics that the his Party has historically had difficulty attracting.
That feat had absolutely nothing to do with his connections, and
everything to do with making him the runaway favorite for GOP nominee in 2000.
Likewise, people also forget that despite Bush's speech problems, he also
became, in the late 1990's the pre-eminent propoundent of a new ideology -
compassionate conservatism.
Yes, it was Bush's last name that let him get into the governor's office in
the first place, but after that, he was pretty much on his own. Thus,
while I am admittedly ashamed that Bush got an opportunity solely because
of his last name, I am also justifiably proud of his accomplishments in
assembling a Presidential resume.
