While we're on the subject I'd like to note that the other
son of a president that was himself elected, John Quincy
Adams, was probably one of the most dedicated public
servants this country has ever had. _After_ he was
president he served in the House of Representatives for the
rest of his life. Offhand, I know of no other president
that held office after their term as Chief Executive, let
alone for 20 some odd years.
Coincidentally, The Adams' both had the same first and last
name's but different middle names, Adams won the election
with fewer votes than Andrew Jackson, and (ahem) both he and
his father served only one term. 8^)
Oh, and speaking of Adams coincidences, John Adams and
Thomas Jefferson were often at great odds early in the
country's history, but later in life they became fast
friends and corresponded regularly. The two great patriots
died within hours of each other on July 4th, 1826, 50 years
_to the day_ after the Declaration of Independence.
