The red strip goes to pin one. There should be a label on the motherboard indicating which one is pin one. Oh, and if you can find one it's a good idea to replace the huge noisy fan with one that fits into an expansion card backing plate. I got one of those from Maplin here in the UK for less than USD10 and it keeps the inside of my machine very cool and is almost silent (quieter than the hard-disks anyway). You can probably cut the wires going to the fan and then cover over the bare wires with insulation tape (I certainly did that to the fan on my machine).
