Did you check that the jumpers at the back of both drives and the cdrom
are set correctly?  There's usually a sticker on top of the drive that
shows the jumper settings if you want the device to be a master or slave
or standalone.  The jumpers are normally located next to the socket
where you plug the flat cable in.
