Well, personally, I feel that anything written by me to an individual [as opposed to a public forum] ought to be kept private. If anyone wishes to make it public, I expect to be informed *before* it goes public. And I extend the same courtesy back to the rest of the world. It really doesn't matter if the contents of my mail are 'personal' or just general conversation. I expect the same consideration to be shown to me that I extend to others.
