Perhaps part of John's difficulty with understanding your concept of balance is one of perspective. The U.S. has been on a conservative swing for over two decades now, and is probably more conservative now than in any period since the great depression. Nixon would be a liberal in the eyes of todayâs Republicans - can you imagine this administration creating the EPA or instituting wage and price controls? Hell, I can't even imagine Clinton doing that.
On the other hand, todayâs conservatives would be on the fringe of the political spectrum in the '60s and '70s.
One of the problems is that the conservatives have co-opted the media for the most part. You still hear cries of liberal bias, but for the most part the mainstream press has become a tool of the right, and this has upset the political balance. Now the right not only has most of the money, they can exclude much of what they do not want the public to know from reaching the front pages (such as indications prior to the war that Iraq didn't have WMDs) or by drowning out the really damaging news of failure after failure in Iraq by keeping juicy soap opera stuff in the news day after day. Does anyone else think that someone at CBS gave Dan Rather just enough rope to hang himself?
I keep thinking that America - especially the part that doesn't pay that much attention and takes stuff like the Swift Boat add campaign at face value or those that still believe that Iraq was involved somehow in the 9/11 attacks - is going to wake up one morning and realize that they're getting reamed and the ideological pendulum will start to swing in the other direction. The question to me is not if it will happen, but if it will happen in time to save the country from these elitists. I'm convinced that even now they will stop at nothing to retain power - that if they can't win the coming election fairly they will do whatever it takes to rig it.
