The system suggested earlier on in this thread of a 1st, 2nd, 3rd choice team-that-you-play-against-over-a-weekend may well be useful to keep TD's sane and to keep flustered captains on-side, it's not so useful if you have beginners playing in a single demonstration match and you want to instill them with a notion of spirit. The BULA system has a breakdown of how you should be grading the opposition (a very important lesson for new-comers) and it is also requires players to look at their own game. There is one section on Emotional Control which would be a useful tool if you're trying to teach a players that kicking a disc about if s/he drops it is unacceptable. I don't think it needs dumbing down, I think that kids can easily decide whether another team's use of anglo-saxon was poor, normal or good. I also like the final question which is something along the lines of "Was your opponent: a) less spirited than you, b) the same, c) more spirited than you". I think youngsters that get into the habit of recognising a more spirited team and rewarding them for it is a good thing. I'm not saying I wish to see the BULA scoring system at every competition, or that I think a print out of the rules and a score between 1-to-5 wouldn't suffice but I would strongly recommend that people who are introducing Spirit to kids who maybe have a background in other sports use the BULA system and explain it rather than just say "How spirited were the opposition, score 1 to 5". pugh ps I hosted a tournament where spirit was a score of 1 to 5. Over 95% of scores were "4". Was it an incredibly spirited event or were people just a little non-plussed with the freedom offered to them? And about that industry that exists to develop communications and mechanics, aren't you kind of making the arguement for the scoring system thats been put forward? ie one that has been put together to make explicit the qualitative and quantitative measures of spirit?
