Yes Dave, but you got it running.
I read your manual about starting brltty in /etc/ini.d/rc.local.
That file says if /etc/rc.local exists to run it, so I put /bin/brltty -e -bhm 
in /etc/rclocal.
It seems to be working fine.

I want to try the trick of configuring --with-init-path one of thse days.
