Problem is: cooperatives have been perverted into a way of avoiding
taxes and getting rich. Usually, all the "profit" should be
distributed to the members equally, but it doesn't happen that way.
Cooperatives are pratically banned in Brazil for this reason. They
subverted the original purpose.
When I first entered a cooperative, it was like a dream come true.
After two years I realized what a nasty scam it was. People were paid
above average sallaries, but there were some who were getting richer
by the minute. These guys were the "elite", the founders of the
cooperative.
Basically, they set up another cooperative to hold the peons. All the
contracts were owned by the original cooperative who outsourced the
real work to the second cooperative. Sounds confusing? It is! Well,
the bottom line is that they shared profits unequally between the 50
"elite" members or so and the president was making some 400,000
dollars a year. The other 2,000 members of the exploited cooperative
were paid an hourly rate.
It gives me shivers just hearing the word "cooperative".
