Jemima D is feeling her age a little (I know the feeling)
and we are currently looking into a variety of major
improvements.

One of the areas of concern is the engine, a Lister SR2. It
has often been said that these engines thrive on neglect
and that has certainly been the case here. We have had
problems at various times with ancillaries but the engine
itself just keeps going. We think it last had a major
overhaul in the early 1980s.

However, whilst it is still happily chugging along, the
quantity of black and blue smoke has been increasing
recently to the point where locking can be most unpleasant.
The oil tends to black and smells burnt and there is always
oil in the bilge. I'm not a mechanic but all this suggests
to me that the rings and or bores are well worn. Do all
agree with my diagnosis?

Next is the cure. Will it be absolutely necessary to remove
the engine from the boat for the work to be done?

If doing the work on the rings and bores would it be
foolish not to do everything else?

If this is correct, what is 'everything else'? I would
imagine big and little end bearings, crankshaft bearings,
injectors. More?

Any suggestions where we might have the work done? In the
past Middlewich Boats was the place we would have gone
first (they overhauled the gearbox for us a few years ago)
but I have been told that the employees with the knowledge
and experience of SR2s are no longer working there. Anyone
know for sure?

The really big question - what is all this likely to cost?
The engine work plus removing/refitting, if essential.
There is no flexible coupling in the prop shaft so
refitting the engine will be critical.

I know that there are a number of knowledgable SR2
enthusiasts out there, we look forward to hearing your
views.
