I posted my questions.
It's all been very helpful, if sobering. It sounds like the
money involved in having a business carry out a full
rebuild would be prohibitive.
>From what more than one has suggested, it would seem that
the first course of action would be to get the injectors
refurbished and clean the breather pipes. I have the
original manual here, I will take it to the boat and try to
see whether I think the removal and refitting is within my
skill level. I don't suppose anyone would like to do me a
set of step-by-step instructions? What are the potential
pitfalls, where could I go wrong?
I do wonder if there is a fuel leak into the oil. It would
certainly explain some of the things we have seen.
Unfortunately, a glance at the Uxbridge Marine Engine
Services guide to checking and solving this:
http://www.marineengine.co.uk/Dilution_doc.htm
shows that it would be a process beyond my abilities. I may
possibly, however, have someone locally who could carry it
out.
My last question and the big one, is this. If we check and
rectify the less major problems as mentioned but do nothing
about worn/stuck rings, worn bores, worn valve guides etc.
what will happen with the engine? Will it just slowly
expire? Run bearings? Carry on for another 30 years?
Thanks again
