Hi Dave Don't worry about intruding. I don't think you could have asked in a better place if you want an honest answer to your question. And don't worry too much about netiquette either - but be aware that this is not a newsgroup. Replies will usually be on-group. That way everybody will be able to see the reply and may provide additional (or contrary) information to a reply. It will also ensure that replies are archived for the benefit of people who might ask the same (or a similar) question in the future. In fact if you were to search the archives at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/canals-list/messages , you might find some answers to your questions - or, more probably, come up with a whole new set of questions that you would like to ask. My first instinct would be to ask your friend why she is thinking of living on a boat. Does she think that it might be a cheap way of living? You say that she wants to buy "in or near Nottingham" - is that because she works thereabouts and would want to keep the boat in one place so that she can go to work each day?
