I think the problem with a number of narrow boat installations is that
the skin tanks are just too small.  They are fine when the engine is
relatively lightly loaded for normal canal use, but an extended run
against a strong current or punching the tide (or just going fast on
open water because you are not constrained by the channel) leads to
overheating simply because there isn't enough surface area of skin tank
to dissipate the resulting heat.  And if the cooling circuit is plumbed
with flexible piping which isn't sufficiently heat resistant, the first
effect might be softening of the pipes, which then squeeze out from
under their jubilee clips.  I wonder if this was Hannah's problem?
