We found the Ashby quite easy going and averaged 3 mph for
the first 10 miles. The main thing we noticed since our last visit was
the new Trinity complex at Hinckley with a large marina and new pub, but
with overnight mooring at £5 per night I don't think we will be stopping
for a drink.

We did the Ashby recently for the first time and we found it a lovely canal.
If you want a lot of nightlife then it's not for you, but for rural peace
and quiet it's excellent. Hinckley is the only large town on the canal and all
the other towns and villages seem to stand back to watch you go past.

We were told that half the people who go up the Ashby turn at Shackerstone,
but the final run up to Snarestone and through the tunnel is probably the
best bit. There is a sanistation at the end, just past the winding hole, and
there's a small wooden shed run by the Ashby Canal Trust selling souvenirs.
More
importantly, perhaps, is that (to encourage boaters) you can register in the
wooden hut and the Ashby Canal Trust will send you a certificate free of
charge to say you got there.

We were told that the best place to eat in Snarestone is the Globe and it's
absolutely true - fresh-cooked food instead of microwave-in-a-bag that most
pubs use. We found out the next day it is actually the *only* place that
serves
food in Snarestone! It's easy to find - take the horsepath from the south
portal of the tunnel and it goes through the pub car park.

As for Trinity Marina, which incorporates a canalside Brewers Fayre, there
are about 300 yards of Visitor moorings along the canal. But all the space is
taken up by boats being sold by the Marina. I could be cynical and say that
this at least saves you from eating at a Brewers Fayre, but my son is a
manager
at one of their new 'contemporary dining' restaurants and family solidarity
stops me. ;-)
