It's not spin to ensure a campaign has clear messages that its
representatives try and get across at every opportunity, nor is it
spin to think in advance about the difficult questions likely to be
asked.
I agree that pre-memorised answers are rarely effective. Speaking from
the heart is always good, but the brain should be engaged too! (As I'm
sure you did - this is no personal criticism.)
Effective campaigning is always a careful balance between discipline
and passion, planning and spontanenity, consensus and leadership.
