Seriously, I would agree that 10 hour days are quite ambitious for first timers. I have found that 7 hours or so is generally plenty for anyone new to canals.
Steve NB Bream This is why a number of the suggestions have been for 'out and back' routes - if you head out for half the period and then turn round, you can find your own pace - if by then you have gone half as far or twice as far as you intended, you will still be able to get back in time! I would also advise visiting an attraction (such as a historic house or museum) on the *return* journey, as you then know whether you can afford the time (if necessary you can turn back early to make the time you need).
