That's why the online checker is so much better, as it tells you if
the boat is in fact licensed.

Going back to my original trade for a moment, the problem is that
behaviours that are not reinforced (ie rewarded) extinguish (ie
stop). When you use the online checker, you get a page that says
"thanks" right enough, but that really just reassures you that your
report has got through.
It would be much more rewarding (and not difficult to arrange) if you
also got an automated email, giving the kind of explanation Debbi's
just given us here:
"We know about all the unlicensed boats in our area, but it's still
really helpful to have your report so we can keep track of where they
are... Don't worry if nothing seems to be happening to the boat you
reported, we are working on it, we promise"
It would also have the benefit of checking that folk were giving
valid email addresses.
Meantime, we'll go back to reporting unlicensed boats via the online
checker.
