We have the same sort of belt. I don't replace the links myself but I 
have watched my Dad once or twice and the tool he uses looks like a 
pair of scissors.

I shall now attempt to describe the said implement but I don't think 
I will do very well...

It has little perpendicular metal pin bits on the ends of what would 
be the blades of the scissors which you push into the gap in the belt 
link. Upon squeezing the handles (or pulling them apart) the pins 
move apart also. This opens up the gap and allows the link to be 
removed. 

You can also attach a new link, using the tool to open up the gap 
before attaching the links.
