It's the cost of assembling a compact voltage reg that can cope with  
10.5 to 15 volts, surely?

I have been using one of these for about a year. see

It does run on the transformer that powered the 12 Volt 20 W filament version.
The light output is very good for 3 watts 12 V
What we could do with is someone to try one to see if the battery voltage 
swings damages one!
