Thanks for the links they are very helpful,  the shop only appears to sell the 
ones with the plastic/glass domes,  have you ever seen the yellow material type 
I mentioned,  you can see them on the link below in completed bulbs that was 
given earlier,  but I haven't been able to find anywhere that sells these 
actual types of LED separately or whether they are better or worse than the 
dome types.

  Now the voltage on a toy aeroplane doesn't vary as much as on a boat but so 
far I've had no problems. I set the resistor to cope with teh max expected 
voltage. I would have thought a zenner diode could smooth out any voltage 
spikes.
