It doesn't have to be that compact in the boat context.  I could even 
build or obtain a single largish one and distribute stable 4.5 or 
whatever volts around the boat.  If you look at - say -

you could put them in lots of places, to give a well spread light 
without too many bright spots, and at just over a quid each could afford 
some investment on the power supply.  The current isn't such that you'd 
need a hefty investment in wiring either.  They do work out at about 30p 
each!
