I wouldn't think that you could generalise. Brighter than what? LEDs vary just like light bulbs. I would think that it would be harder to find surface mount devices with voltage protection, but I haven't looked. Working with surface mount devices is not easy. They will have no wires sticking out, just little pads. (that's why they are called surface mount!) If you haven't used them before I would avoid them as I do. -- Nigel Stanley
