None of the (ex-)Ownerships 'New Generation' boats can make it through the
tunnel and 'Aylestone' seriously fouled the gauge coming out of the lock so we
didn't even bother trying the tunnel. Indeed I wasn't even aware there *was* a
basin through it. We turned at the winding hole before the tunnel and went
straight back because there were no moorings left that were out of the way of
boats coming in.

Otherwise, we weren't aware of any other interests in that area that would keep
us there - apart from bus services out to other places.

It's obvious that almost no-one is using the basin and (with my Caldon &
Uttoxeter Canals Trust hat on) I'm curious to get people's views about
why they don't use this stunningly beautiful location. Clearly the
Tunnel is an issue, but even people who get through the tunnel tend to
wind above the lock and don't drop into the basin.

CUCT and BW recently met on site and are jointly going to do work to
remove the weed that has grown due to the lack of use and also tidy up
the pedestrian areas around the basin but is there anything else we
should be thinking about to tempt you to stay here? The relevant point
here is that more boat movements would help slow the growth of weeds
which are flourishing in the still clear water.

On the basis of the gauge mounted at the last lock before the tunnel, and where
t made contact with our boat when we were there last year, I would guess that
ery few boats would be able to get through the tunnel. Having said that, when
e walked to the basin, there was one reasonably standard-looking boat there, so
he question is, is the gauge accurate? If not, I would suggest that that is
art of the problem.
