Thanks for your comments. I take your point about there not being an 
obvious reason to stop here and we should give it some thought as it's a 
very valid comment. Would the short bus ride to Alton Towers count as an 
attraction or as a problem though? ;)

As for lowering the pound, the problem is not the lock but the area just 
before Froghall where the canal breached in the 70's. It was not 
restored to full depth and there is a concrete base that means the pound 
can't be lowered any more than it was at the time of the basin 
restoration project (only a couple of inches, I believe, but don't quote 
me on this as I wasn't involved at the time.)
