My '77 Catalina is definitely polyester resin--if it were epoxy, none of us would ever see osmotic blisters. (I'm lucky--don't have blisters, but know the odor of polyester when I grind/drill it.) If your wounds aren't deep, just gel coat would work for you, certainly. I see that Defender is now selling a new kind of gel coat that doesn't have to be covered airtight in order to cure... Gel coat is interesting stuff because it normally stays tacky as long as it's exposed to air, and only cures when you cover it; it's made to be the first coat in a female mold. That's we have to use the mylar film or whatever to cover it up when we do a repair. But the self-curing version could be used to fill, and then sanded down smooth and polished with really fine wet-or-dry paper.
On the other hand, epoxy paste would do pretty much the same job and cost less money if the color matches up. The stores like Menards and Home Depot around here sell white epoxy underwater paste for about ten bucks. That's going to be stronger than gelcoat...
