Tony,

As long as it's a High Frequency (200 Khz) transducer, A good deal of the time there will be very little difference. You may have a slight Impedance mismatch that could give a slight mis-read. But, it's likely that a NEW set will have an "offset" adjustment. You can adjust to Trim to the proper depth reading.

May I offer a suggestion about covering the 4 inch hole in the bulkhead?
Have you thought of a FISHFINDER /Sounder.? Many are large squares and likely could cover the bulkhead hole.
Sometimes less costly than a "Yachtie" type
... and besides the Large Readout Depth numbers... You can often "See" the bottom conditions. IE: Soft pattern line, could indicate mud or weed bottom.... Hard line indicates Rock ...Etc...
Besides... Finding fish.... LOL

Subject: catalina27-talk: Dead Signet Depth Sounder

My '89 came with those big round Signet knot/log and depth gauges. The
depth sounder (SL172) is, I'm afraid, dead. I opened it up and there was
that smell of charred electronics and some burnt parts on the circuit board.
Now I need a depth sounder. The replacement unit from Signet is over $400
(without the sender). That seems expensive to me, given that a sounder plus transducer can be bought for less than half of that. It's just that I have
that big (4 inch?) hole in the bulkhead to deal with. Has anyone come up
with a good (and inexpensive) solution to a replacement unit? Are
transducers interchangeable, or do I need to find one that fits the same
through-hull hole? If I need a new transducer, can that be changed in the
water (without too much drama)? What other questions do I need answered?
(Left myself wide open there, didn't I?)
