I have no objection to a fish-finder type sounder. I would prefer not to
make the hole any larger if at all possible. I have dreams of someday
getting some 'real' electronics and mount them at the wheel. That way the
holes could be covered up and passengers could properly lean against the
bulkhead.

My make-shift solution is actually a fishfinder hanging on an unused knob
and a transducer screwed to a stick that I tied off to the stern rail. It's
rather unimpressive, but it works...

Tony,

As long as it's a High Frequency (200 Khz) transducer, A good deal of the
time there will be very little difference.
You may have a slight Impedance mismatch that could give a slight mis-read.
But, it's likely that a NEW set will have an "offset" adjustment. You can
adjust to Trim to the proper depth reading.

May I offer a suggestion about covering the 4 inch hole in the bulkhead?
Have you thought of a FISHFINDER /Sounder.? Many are large squares and
likely could cover the bulkhead hole.
Sometimes less costly than a "Yachtie" type
... and besides the Large Readout Depth numbers... You can often "See" the
bottom conditions.
IE: Soft pattern line, could indicate mud or weed bottom.... Hard line
indicates Rock ...Etc...
Besides... Finding fish.... LOL
