I used to race on another boat many years ago.  I was the
navigator/tactician.  We had some success.  I was able to attend a lecture
by Tom Whidden who, as navigator/tactician on board Stars and Stripes had
just won the AC.  He was talking about boat potential and the subject of
using a boat's polars came into the mix.  His reaction was that on a winning
AC boat they reach 100% about 10% of the time!  If you sail the boat to
match polars you will not win many races. He did say that the pro sailors
sail to maybe 95% potential.

I think 90% of handicap racing is making the boat go as close to 100% 
optimum speed as close to 100% of the time as possible. Having
targets and constantly trying to sail to them is vital toward getting to 
that mythical 100/100 quotient....something only Terry Hutchinson
seems capable of doing, these days....
