Hewlett-Packard (HP) makes this drive (8200i).   According the McFadden FAQ, 
this is the same drive as the Sony CRX120E.  

I don't know that much about firmware bugs/updates but it doesn't make sense 
to me that this setup would work with older versions of cdrecord and kernel, 
but not with the current version.   In addition, I scoured the internet for 
updates to the 1.0f firmware I have for this drive (and the Sony) and it 
appears I have the latest version.

Is there any other information I can provide to be more helpful?
