That is my first thought as well, but it's possible that there was a bug all along and the new version of cdrecord tickles it. I would suggest loading the older version which worked, and trying it with the new kernel. I'm using 11a5 with 2.4.16 and having no problems other than the software using ALL the CPU as system time, which I though was due to ide-cd but seems to happen on SCSI as well.
