Thank you all for taking the time to respond, encourage and enlighten
me. I have decided on my courses of actions dependent on the offer yet
to come from the organization.
Although it may on the surface seem like the issue is money, I can
survive on less and have for ten years or so now. Considering the
official poverty line in Canada is about $18,000/yr that's pretty
impressive!
Thank you Marc for pointing out some very significant issues. I have
already told them my requirements and clearly stated and justified my
position on that. So yes, accepting anything less would be
"selling-out". It has become obvious that I have to move on. However,
I will sit tight until the right opportunity is found; I can do that.
I don't believe I have burnt any bridges here as I will work for them
as though I will always be here even though I won't always be here. I
can see though where the integrity of our working relationship can
only degrade based on this issue.
I am using every spare moment to hone my skills as a developer and am
in the process of pursuing a BSc in CompSci. I already have two years
undergrad in Classics and two years of college in CS so it shouldn't
take long to complete the degree.
For Mark Wimer, almost all of our biologists and technicians are under
30 and making around $30k/yr. I also know that they can appreciate
the cost of good IT staff as they pushed a guy to IT manager who is
younger than me and has no certification, and partial schooling (never
completed a degree or college diploma). He was just in the right place
at the right time. Managers in this organization are around $40k/yr.
So yes, I do want to make more money. I can satisfy my altruistic
tendencies after work hours and be able to pay my bills. (By the way I
am accused of being an extreme frugalitist so I am not spendthrift)
For Gary McNeel, Jr. Yes, everyone should read some Ayn Rand. She
makes some very valid points about humanity and society. Not that I
subscribe totally to objectivism, but it does have it's place. BTW I
think my brother went to Rice for a year.
Thanks to all for their time, concern and very sage advice. I know I
am in the right industry!
Oddly enough as I write this I get an e-mail from our Exec. VP asking
my opinion on spending $7500 CDN / $5,000 USD for a domain name....
I think my plan of action is justified ;0)
