Since much of my retirement funds and that of many other people rest on
corporate profits, I sure as hell hope they are concerned with making
money. What about us shareholders?

Bull. Greed may be the desire for conspicuous(sp?) consumption, but it is
also the desire to put a roof over the family's head, food on the table,
and clothes on a kid's back.

More bull. Market forces are the best(although not the only) curb on
"excess" greed. In a properly functioning capitalist society, the avenues
of crime(physical) or fraud do not easily satisfy the desire to consume. To
*really* prosper, one must adopt values of self-improvement, discipline,
and the denial of immediate gratification. That is because the surest way
to profits is to feed *other* people's needs.

You have absolutely no clue as to the moral(and spiritual) underpinnings of
capitalism. That's ok, most people don't. To get such an understanding,
some would recommend reading such luminaries as Hayek. Too dusty for me.
Give me something contemporary. Go to Amazon and do a search for the author
Michael Novak. Or, try reading Fukuyama's "The End of History and the Last
Man".

Want something web-based? Find the site for the Acton Institute, run by Fr.
Sirico(here in Michigan!).

After reading up a bit, you still don't have an idea about why people like
me argue for capitalism, at least your arguments will be sharpened
considerably.
