Well, realize that he might have had other things on his mind at this
time...

During year one (which was actually the title of a 4 issue story arc
written by the same Frank Miller that wrote the Dark Knight Returns
miniseries), Bruce was trying to figure out the most effective way to
actually be a crime fighter.

The first night he went out, he was essentially dressed like a long
shoreman, and kind of got his ass kicked.  This is when he went back to
the mansion and realized he needed an 'edge'...at which point a bat flew
threw one of the windows.  That's when he came up with the "criminals
are a superstitious and cowardly lot" and realized if he took on a bat
costume, that would give him the edge.

During the first few years, people literally didn't realize Batman was a
guy in a costume.  He kept to the shadows and tried very hard to keep
that aura of mystery around, letting criminals think there really was a
giant bat creature stalking them.

So, yeah, a bazillionaire could have gone out and modded a BMW to make a
sleek, cool-looking Batmobile.  But during this period in his 'career',
just learning how to effectively fight crime and keep his 'edge' were
the higher priority issues.

If the story is supposed to be loyal to the Year One storyline...I don't
even know that there -should- be a Batmobile in it.  But since they're
obviously putting one in, I have no problems with Bruce just grabbing a
military vehicle prototype from Waynetech and making whatever bare
modifications are necessary in order for him to do what he set out to
do.  I'd also argue that the military vehicle prototype would probably
be more effective than the kevlar enhanced BMW (otherwise you'd see a
bunch of kevlar-lined BMW's out in the middle east right now) :)

The biggest obstacle this movie is going to have to overcome is the 60's
Batman TV show (which I think Burton came a long way towards doing), and
the godawful Schumacher Batman films (which undid everything and more
that Burton did to distance the franchise from the public perception of
things like "Bat Shark Repellent" in Batman's utility belt.  This
concern over the appearance of the new Batmobile really illustrates
that, IMO.

Why do you say that?  It seems to me that adding a steel and kevlar
shell to, say, a BMW 9-series would have been well within a young
bazillionaire's reach.
